Avert Climate Change
The
effects of climate change
are profound and far-reaching. Learning the hard way that we can't separate the economy from the ecological systems that support it,
climate change, perhaps the greatest challenge and threat humanity has ever faced, has been left largely unchecked by world leaders to continue unabated threatening the basis of civilization itself. Scientists have high confidence that
global temperatures will continue to rise by up to 11.5°F
by the end of the century if we fail to reduce emissions from burning
fossil fuels, such as coal, oil and natural gas, with
dry regions becoming drier and wet regions becoming wetter. This rise in average temperature will have
far-reaching effects
on the earth's climate patterns and on all living things. Many of these changes have
already begun. With this rise comes potentially devastating impacts for human society, biodiversity and the stability and health of the natural world we depend on and cherish. The
scientific consensus is unequivocal: human activities are causing climate change. Every national academy of science of every major country in the world agrees. Every professional scientific society in every field related to the field of climate endorses it. 97-98 percent of all scientists that are most active in publishing in the field of climate science agree with it. Setting tough limits on global emissions of greenhouse gases could
prevent 20-65% of the damaging effects of climate change by 2100

while
advancing economic growth, creating jobs and improving America's energy security. According to the
International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis
and common sense, limiting climate change to target levels will become
much more difficult to achieve, and more expensive, if action is not taken soon. Unless we act now, our children will inherit a hotter world, dirtier air and water, more severe droughts, floods, wildfires, extreme weather, a massive loss of biodiversity, ecosystems in peril and a destabilized climate.

A failure to act on climate change will "Result in an intergenerational injustice, with our children and grandchildren scorning our generation for ignoring the climate change threat – with moral outrage." ~ Anthony Costello, UCL Institute for Global Health
Why Act Now?
Solutions To The Climate Crisis
There is no 'quick fix' to the
climate crisis. Everything is connected, but one thing is for sure: the solutions will come from the ground - up. From the grassroots movement pressuring leaders to take action, change and create new laws and unite in a call for survival and democracy. Whether it's
taking action within your household and community
or
joining with millions of other concerned citizens to pressure leaders, the best, most effective solutions to global warming begin with you! And maybe a few of your friends. Together, we all add up and make a real difference. Together, we can change the world. But, we must act.

"There can be
no solution to climate change without
addressingdeforestation. Forests play a critical role in the climate system by providing a natural carbon capture and storage function and by regulating rainfall patterns; sustainable forest management can make a major contribution to climate change mitigation." ~

Union of Concerned Scientists - Top 10 Benefits of Climate Action
"The benefits of reducing greenhouse gas emissions outweigh the costs by trillions of dollars.
Combining the results of the report by the German Institute of Economic Research
and Watkiss et al. 2005
studies, we find that the total cost of climate action (cost plus damages) in 2100 is approximately $12 trillion, while the cost of inaction (just damages) is approximately $20 trillion." ~

- 350.org - "350.org is building a global grassroots movement to solve the climate crisis. Our online campaigns, grassroots organizing, and mass public actions are led from the bottom up by thousands of volunteer organizers in over 188 countries."
- Natural Resources Defense Council - "NRDC is the nation's most effective environmental action group, combining the grassroots power of 1.3 million members and online activists with the courtroom clout and expertise of more than 350 lawyers, scientists and other professionals."
- The Nature Conservancy - "The Nature Conservancy is the leading conservation organization working around the world to protect ecologically important lands and waters for nature and people. We address the most pressing conservation threats at the largest scale."
- DeSmogBlog - "The DeSmogBlog Project began in January 2006 and quickly became the world’s number one source for accurate, fact based information regarding global warming misinformation campaigns."
- Skeptical Science - "The goal of Skeptical Science is to explain what peer reviewed science has to say about global warming. When you peruse the many arguments of global warming skeptics, a pattern emerges. Skeptic arguments tend to focus on narrow pieces of the puzzle while neglecting the broader picture. For example, focus on Climategate emails neglects the full weight of scientific evidence for man-made global warming. Concentrating on a few growing glaciers ignores the world wide trend of accelerating glacier shrinkage. Claims of global cooling fail to realise the planet as a whole is still accumulating heat. This website presents the broader picture by explaining the peer reviewed scientific literature."
- Greenpeace - "Faced with the choice of deadly, dirty, dangerous energy like coal, oil and nuclear power, or safe, clean and renewable power, what would you decide? Renewable energy, smartly used, can and will meet our demands. No oil spills, no climate change, no radiation danger, no nuclear waste – simply energy we can trust. We can achieve a world with 100% renewable energy. Will you make that choice? "
- Polluter Watch - " PolluterWatch is a project of Greenpeace that holds polluters accountable for the work they’re doing to block the transition from the dirty fossil fuels of the past to the clean energy sources of the future."
- National Wildlife Federation - "NWF advocates for national and international policy and legislation that will cut greenhouse gas emissions to levels that scientists deem necessary to avoid major climatic impacts. NWF advocates for solutions to climate change that will reduce carbon pollution from coal, oil and natural gas, transition America to a clean energy economy and invest in communities, help the world adapt to the impacts of global warming and make forests and farms a part of the solution."
- Union of Concerned Scientists - "The Union of Concerned Scientists is the leading science-based nonprofit working for a healthy environment and a safer world. UCS combines independent scientific research and citizen action to develop innovative, practical solutions and to secure responsible changes in government policy, corporate practices, and consumer choices."
- Climate Reality Project - "The Climate Reality Project is bringing the facts about the climate crisis into the mainstream and engaging the public in conversation about how to solve it. We help citizens around the world discover the truth and take meaningful steps to bring about change. Founded and chaired by Al Gore, Nobel Laureate and former Vice President of the United States, The Climate Reality Project has more than 5 million members and supporters worldwide. It is guided by one simple truth: The climate crisis is real and we know how to solve it."
- Sierra Club - "We are America's largest and most influential grassroots environmental organization. Explore, enjoy, and protect the planet with us! The Sierra Club is helping to grow a clean energy economy in the U.S. by repowering America with green, renewable energy: Wind, solar, and other safe, clean sources of power that will energize a new American century and rebuilding America with high-performance homes and buildings: Smarter, greener buildings that eliminate global warming emissions, reduce utility bills, and generate renewable energy."
- David Suzuki Foundation - "Global warming is a serious problem, and we're working to decrease carbon emissions in Canada. On the national level, we are developing a clean, renewable energy plan for Canada through the Trottier Energy Futures Project. On the provincial level, we're encouraging friendly competition to see which province can adopt the best climate policies through our Race to the Top campaign. For individuals, we offer resources on how to go carbon neutral at home and at work. Together, we can turn back climate change."
- World Wildlife Fund - "WWF's goal is for the world to develop an equitable low carbon economy by 2050, which is resilient to that level of climate change which is unavoidable. All efforts should be undertaken to keep warming of global average temperature below 1.5°C (compared to 1850). WWF works on low carbon development and climate policy, clean and smart energy, forests and climate, climate finance, and climate business engagement."
- Conservation International - " Through our nature-based approach, CI is demonstrating the important role that ecosystems can play in mitigating and adapting to climate change impacts. Climate change is one of the greatest environmental issues of our time. We need to act quickly and take advantage of existing solutions to prevent irreversible damage to our planet. Natural ecosystems provide significant opportunities to cut emissions dramatically and to preserve the adaptive potential of our biosphere."
